4 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination adjustable chair and easel and. it has as one of its objects the provision of a device of the character described wherein the chair is adjustable in ,1 height and the easel has a plurality of adjustable features.
Another object-of the invention is the provision of a device of the character mentioned which be folded compactly.
6 Other objects of the invention will be apparent from a reading of the following specification.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with I the accompanying drawings which form part of the application with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawings nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therefrom as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of an embodiment of my invention.
Fig, 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan View showing in folded or collapsed condition the structure shown in Fig. l; and
Fig. 5 is a side view of Fig. 4.
0- Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 7 indicates a chair comprising a seat 8 mounted on side rails 9 and an end rail 10. A leg 11 is pivotally connected to a transverse bar 12 held by the side rails 9 adjacent corresponding ends thereof and said leg is adapted to he swung against the underside of the seat. A pair of legs 13 are joined by cleats l4 and are pivotally mounted on a rod 15 passing through the side rails 9. The legs 11 and 13 are pivotally connected together at the points 1'7, the leg 11 extending substantially from the inner face of one or" the legs 13 to the inner face of the other leg 13. The lower ends of the legs 13 are notched as indicated at 18 so that when 50- the legs 11 and 13 are collapsed and swung against the lower face of the seat, the legs 13 will be unobstructed by the rod 12, which rod enters the mentioned notches 18. In order to provide a chair adjustable in height, the rod 15 is remov- 55' able so that it may be passed through any one of the apertures 19 formed in the side rails 9. The legs l3'being between the side rails 9, and the leg 11 being between the legs 13, the legs are foldable against the lower face of the seat.
Arms 21 support an easel 22, said arms being pivotally connected to the side rails 9 by hollow pivots 23 and contacting the outer faces of said rails. When the combination chair and easel is folded to the form shown in Fig. 4, the rod 15, which must be withdrawn before the legs may be collapsed, is passed through the hollow pivots 23 and function as a handle for carrying the device. The arms 21 being pivotally mounted, the easel is thereby adjustable relative to the seat and the artist using the seat. Means are provided for holding the arms in a selected position, said means comprising bars 25 pivotally connected at 26 to the mentioned arms and provided with notches 27 at their lower edges, which notches are engageable with pins 28, one of which extends from each ide of the seat 8.
A cleat 30 joins the arms 21 adjacent the upper ends of the latter and said arms are pivotally connected at 31 to the side rails 22a of the easel 22, said side rails contacting the outer faces of the arms 21 so that the easel may be folded against said arms, the easel proper or, in other Words, the supporting board, being secure to the edges of the rails 22a. The easel being pivotally connected to the arms, a second adjustment is thereby given the easel so that it may be conveniently positioned relative to the artist. Means are provided for securing the easel in a predetermined or selected position, said means comprising bars 32 pivotally connected to the easel at 33 and provided with slots 34, through which extend bolts 35 threadedly engaged by wing nuts 36 which, when tightened, hold the mentioned bars 32 in a desired position. The easel 22 is swingable against the arms 21, and the latter, being pivotally connected to the outer faces of the rails 9 on which the seat is mounted, are swingable to a position parallel with said rails, in which position of the arms, the easel contacts the mentioned arms, it bein understood that the legs are first collapsed before the easel is folded against the chair.
The lower cleat 14 may be used to pull the legs to'open position and the rails 2211 have notches 222) out therein to accommodate bolts 35 in the collapsed position.
From the foregoing description it will readily be appreciated that I have provided a combination seat and easel which may be folded compactly and which fulfills the other objects of the invention.
' What is claimed as new is:
l 1. A combination chair and easel having foldable parts and comprising a chair including a seat and legs pivotally connected together and to the seat and foldable onto the lower face of the seat, removable means for holding the legs in a selected position to obtain a desired height of the seat, an easel, arms supporting said easel and pivotally connected to the seat and means for holding the arms in a selected position, said seat including rails to the outer faces of which said arms are pivoted to render'the arms foldable against the lower face of the seat, apertured pivots connecting and passing thru said arms and rails, said removable means being insertable thru said apertured pivots to function as a handle for carrying the combination chair and easel.
2. A combination chair and easel comprising a substantially flat seat, crossed legs pivotally and adjustablyconnected at one end of the seat wherebythe height of the seat may be adjusted, certain of said legs extending from said end of theseat to approximately the other end thereof,
an easel supported from the last mentioned end of the seat and means connecting said easel above the seat and providing an angular adjustment of the easel.
3. A combination chair and easel comprising a substantially flat seat, a support for the seat at one end portion thereof and extending approximately to the opposite end, said support being adjustable to vary the height of the seat, an easel supported from the last mentioned end of the seat and means connecting said easel above the seat and providing an angular adjustment of the easel.
4. A combination chair and easel comprising a substantially flat seat, a support for the seat at one end thereof and extending approximately to the opposite end, said support being adjustable to vary the height of the seat, an easel, means for supporting the easel from the last mentioned end of the seat, adjusting means for the supporting means to vary the angle thereof with respect to the seat, and means providing an angular adjustment of the easel with respect to its supporting means.
