F.D.FORTNEY BOOK Filed Jan. 8, 1925 ll t Patented Apr. Z7, lggt FRANK D. FOBTNEY, OF BRGOKLYN, NEJV YGRK.
BOOK.
T @ZZ whom t may Concernf Beit knovvn that l, FRANK D. Foa'rnsr,
Va citizen ot the Unitedv States, residir; at
Brooklyn, county ot Kings, and State ot New York, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact speciiication,
This invention relates ,generally to books, and particularly to bound volumes otl that character wherein supplementary book sections are used therewith.
rThe .primary object ot the .invention is to provide a book and its supplemental section o't such character that the said section may be removably secured Within the book in such manner as to lill out the thickness or the same and thereby assist in preventingv collapsingl of the back of the permanently bound volume, and which enables the said volume to present an appearance ot completely filling out the space between the front and back covers.
A further and particular object ot the invention is to provide a book of this character, the advantages ot which are apparent, featured by means of an improved and simplilied nature for strengthening' or reinforcing the back of the permanently bound book to prevent creasing or collapsing ot the same. Y lVith these object-s in view, together With others which Will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as Will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawing, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
ln the drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a book constructed in accordance with the invention. a cover thereof being shoivn in raised position, and,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the book with the covers in closed position,
rlhe book or permanently bound volume comprises the front and back cover members represented generally at 3, connected by the back member Lil-,the latter having` secured as by glue, stitching or other preferred means, the back edges of the sheets or leaves of the book represented at 5. T he back and cover members may be formed ot cloth orheavy paper as desired, and the book may vary in thickness accordinglyv as occasion demands.
Associated with this permanently bound volume isa supplemental or removable book section, the leaves ot which have secured thereto the cover members 7. The leaves of this supplemental volume may be secured to the back 8 thereof in a manner similar, as lesired, to the method of securing the leaves et the main volume to its back.
In order that the supplemental volume may be associated ivithinthe covers ot' the permanently bound volume so as to lie properly Within the same Without protrusion or bulging. the back l of the main volume is of greater breadth than the bot y oft leaves per se; the difference in breadth being` substantially equal to the thickness ot the supplemental book to be accommodated. One oi the cover members 3 ot the permanently bound volume is provided upon its inner tace With a .pocket indicated generally at 9 to receive one of the covers 7 of the supplemental book. rihe cover 7 to be inserted Within this pocket may have its lateral edges inclined as shovvn by dotted line in Fig'. l, so as to facilitate ready insertion ot this cover member in said pocket.
That part or" the back l ot the permanently bound book which has no leaves secured thereto is reinforced or stayed by fr iiller member 10 of substantial thickness, ot a breadth equal to the space to be illed, and of a length equal to the height of the pages or leaves 5 ot the volume. rllhis filler member may be formed of one or more plies of relatively heavy cardboard or may be of Wood or suitable metal. In the present instance, for the purposes ot illustration, this filler member is formed ott heavy cardboard, 9* and is I:glued or cemented securely to the. back el ot the volume. To ri gidly anchor this filler member in place, as well as to lend rigidity and strength to the entire book structure, the filler member l0 is glued or cemented innf'ardly `trom one end of a fabric member ll ot a length substantially equal to that ot the leaves 5. The inner tree end of this fabric is then passed around against and is glued to the back 4, with its extremity doubled back and glued Within or between leaves 5 ot the volume a substantial distance from the adjacent edge ot' the filler member l0. rThe fabric member or anchor is extended across the cover 3 and is rigidly secured thereto, beingdoubled back upon itseli a substantial distance and secured at its edges to provide the inwardly opening pocket 9 for the reception of the cover member i' of the supplemental boolr. It will be rndersteed. ot course, that the leaves of the supplemental bool: are substantially equal in length and l` 'eaaltl"L to the length and breadth of the leaves 5 et' the permanently bound volume. The supnlemental volume is associated, as above described. with the perinanentl7 bound rolunie in such manner as to have its edges substantially coincide at all times' with the edges 5 or" the permanentlyv bound volume of leaves. Vfhen the cover member 25 is opened, it carries with it the cover member T o'l' the supplemental book, and 'lie pages ofi the latter may be used for notations desired. The leaves 6 of the supplen'iental i'olume are at all times available for use and may be turned as readilyY within the volume as removed therefrom, and the presence ot the supplemental bool; within the corers of the main Volume in no wap1 interferes with proper manipulation or opening and closing' of the main volume. rlie supplen'iental volume thus lits within and forms a component part of the main volume7 and yet ma)v be readil)Y removed therefrom and replaced when desired. rl`he particular structure employed in reinforcing` the back preserves the construction of the latter as well as the appearance thereof. and danger ot cracking. tearing` or breaking of the same is obviated.
Haring thus described my intention, I claim:
'r book comprising a bach member, a pair of covers flexibly connected to said back, a set ot' leaves secured to said back, the top ot said set of' leaves tern'iinating short of the upper longitudinal edge oi said back inember, a i'iller member (1U) located against the inner surt'aee of said back member and e3:- tcnding a short distance outwardly thereof and filling' the space adjacent said back member between 'the upper longitudinal edge of the latter and the top of' said set ot leaves.l a labric member tor anchoring' said filler member in place. said fabric member beingy secured to the Jfront ot' said 'iller member' and haring its inner free end passed around against and secured to said back member with its evtremity doubled haelt and securedwithin ul set ot leaves. the other end ot' said :t'alnic member extending.` across the top cover, doubled upon itsel'i a substantial distance and serured at its edges to deline an inwardly opening` poel-iet, and a supplemental lioolt. comprising a cover member and having a body ot leaves substantiall)v equal in length and breadth to said set ot leaves associated with said back member and sulstantia lj.' filling the space between the top of said set of leaves and said top cover, one end of said cover member being insertable within said pocket on said top corer for the purpose speciied.
In testimony whereof I a'lliX my signature.
FRANK D. FORTIEY.
