Application 'filed February 12, 1923. Serial N'o. 131,546;
/o all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBAN VVAnnuN WAY, a citizen of the United' States, residing in Philadelphia', Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Hinges, of which the follow-ing is a spe'ciiication.
My invention relates to certain improve' ments in hinges of they type in which one leafV can be adjusted i-n'respeot to theA other by tiiirning Athe pintle so as to locate properly a door in a door trame.
One object of myv invention is to impr-ove the construction oi a hinge, in which an eccentric is adjustablyV inountedin a knuckle ot a hinge so that, while the eccentric' can he adjusted, it cannot be .removed `from the hinge.
A further object koi the invention is 'to simplify the construction off a hinge of this type and to utilize the' construction in a live knuckle hinge.
In the. aecoinpanyii'ig drawings:
Fig. l is a view of a five knuckle hinge, the knuckles being in section, Vand illustrating my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional line Q-JZ, Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line SMB, Fig. l;
Fig. 4. is a longitudinal sectional View on the line 4wd, Fig. 2;
Fig. is a detached perspective view ol the pintle and one of the eccentrics;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of av modification applied to a five knuckle hinge;
F 7 is a sectional view illustrating my invention applied to a three knuckle hinge;
Figs. 8 and 9 are views illustrating modifications of thc means :For holding the. eccentric in the knuckle;
Fig. l() is a detached perspective view of the detachable 'flange shown in Fig. S; and
Figs. il and l2 are sectional views of olher modifications ol5 the invention.
Ifleferring to the drawings. l and 2 are the leaves ot the hinge. The leaf '1 is provided with three knuckles 3, t and 5, and
plan view on the the lca't 2 is provided with two'knuckles (i` and 7, Fig. l. In the knuckles 6 and 7 are eccentrics 8 and 9, respectively. Each eccentric has a flange 10 at each end, which prevents the eccentric moving longitudinally in its knuckle, yet allowing it to turn freely. Y
ll designates a pintle of an even diameter -tlie knuckles 3, 4l and 5, and through the ecvcentrics -8 and 9i The pintle has a keyway 12, extending substantially the-full lengt-h thereof, as sliown in F ig. 5, and secured to the eccentrics are keys 13, which Aextend into the keywa-y l2 oi the pintle, 1as sho-wn in Figs. 2 and il. The pintle has a slotted head let, in thepresent instancezf A llu-g 125 at the 'head engages one volftl-ie slots in upper end of the knuckle 3. @fthe-r rneans of aieljustably securing the pii'itilelto the knuckle .may he used with-out depart from the essential features otthe inn Ventron. i
In the lower knuckle 5 is a plug 17. rlhisl p'l-ug may bel dispensed with soin-e cases. IVhen it is necessary to adjust the hinge prevent a door from binding inthe tra-nie, thep'i-ntfl'e is withdrawn sutlicienltly to allow 'the' lug l5 tocleartl-re slots ll in the knuckles Then the pintleis turned.` like eccentrics 8 andl turn withv theA pintle, dra-wing the two leaves together until 2thedoorhangs free. In the event of the door drawing awa-y from thefraine, the leaves are separated by turning the pintle in the opposite direction.
The hinge can he secured to the door andv :traine by thc present method of large huilding cmistructio-n, as the pintle can he withdrawn and the two leaves separated. Then one leali can he secure-d to the door and the other leaf can he secured to the frame, as the eccentrics are attached to the knuckles ot one of the leaves of the hinge.
`When a door is in place in a frame and adjusted, the door will swing tree ot the traine.
In Fig. 6, a modification is illustrated, in which the pintle 11nl is stepped. At each end of the step is a short key 13a. In each eccentric Si and 9a is a short keyway to receive the key. The eccentrics, in this instance, are `flanged, as shown in Fig. ll so that, while the knuckles can turn on the eccentrics, the eccentrics are held against longitudinal movement in the knuckles.
In Fig. 7 theinvention is illustrated. as applied to a three knuckle hinge. In this instance, Van eccentric 8l is located in the intermediate knuckle 6b and 1s provided withV a key extending into the slot in the pintle 11.
In Figs. 8, 9 and 10, a means of securing separate anges to the eccentrics is illus-` trated. The {ianges c are recessed at 18, Fig. 10, to receive metalfo-rced from the ends of the eccentric 8c.
In Fig. 11, thek pintle 11d is shown provided with a rectangular portion 13d and the eccentric 8d is shaped to receive this portion. The eccentric is held against longitudinal movement in the knuckle. f
In F ig. l2, the eccentric 8e has an annularv groove 19 and the bottom 20 is pressed into the groovefro-m the knuckle. Other means of securing the eccentric from moving longitudinally in the knuckle may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
l. The combination in af hinge, of two leaves, each having knuckles; an eccentric in one of said knuckles held therein against longitudinal movement independent of the other knuckles; a pintle extending through.
Slidingconnection between the pintle and the eccentric.
'p 3, The combination in a hinge7 of two leaves, one leaf having three knuckles and the other leaf havingPr two knuckles; an eccentric in each of the last mentioned knuckles; means for preventing the removal of the eccentrics from their knuckles; a pintle extending through the knuckles of the hinge; and a sliding connection between thepintle and the two eccentrics.
t. The combination in a hinge, of two leaves, one leaf having three knuckles and the other leaf having two knuckles; a `flanged eccentric ineach of the last mentioned knuckles; a key in each eccentric; a pintle extending through the knuckles of the hinge andr having a keyway to receive the keys of the eccentrics; and means for adjustably securing the pintle toone of the first mentioned knuckles.
5. The combination in a live knuckle hinge, of two leaves, one leaf having three knuckles and the other leaf having two knuckles located in the spaces between the three knuckles; vflanged eccentrics in the knuckles of the two knuckle leaf; a longitudinal ke7 in each of said eccentric; a pintle having a keyway therein; and means at one end of the pintle for adjustably securing the pintle to the three knuckle leaf.
