UNITED STATES THOMAS HOUGH, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
SOUND-REPRODUCING MACHINE.
Application filed June 28, 1922. Serial No. 571,&54.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HoUGH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have nvented certain newand useful Improvements inand Relating to Sound-Reproducing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sound reproducing machines of the portable hornless or cabinet type and has for its object to provide a machine of this type with improved means for carrying the tone arm and reproducer, whereby the case can be made of less depth than usual and the bulk of the machine considerably reduced;
In machines of the above type the tone arm, if a fixture, remains in position above the level of the turntable and consequently the lid'of the casemust be of sufficient depth to house the arm when the case is closed.
In a typical form of the invention as shown, the separate solid platform carrying the tone arm may be formed in two pieces hinged together, one portion being also ,A jointed stay fixed to the lid of the case at one end is attached at the other end to one portion of the hinged platform, when the lid is, closed the hinged platform will be lowered into the case until the highest points of the tone arm and reproducer are below the level, or substantially flush with the motor co vering platform, thus al-` lowing a lid of slight depth to be used. On raising the lid, the jointed stay raises the hinged platform, bringing the tone arm and reproducer into the operative position. A suitable curved guide may be provided in the casing beneath the free end of the hinged platform to guide said end during the rising and falling movements of the platform. This guide may be the usual curved portion provided in known machines. A clip may be provided on the hinged platform to hold the tone arm against movement during transport, and other clips or catches may be provided on the case or on the platform covering the motor for holding the hinged platform in operative position.
To enable the invention to be fully understood, it will now be described by reference to the acconpanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a portable sound reproducing instrument embodying the invention, the lid of the casing the arrangement being such that;
' being open and the tone arm in elevated position, p
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fgure 1, v .Fig. 3 is a vlew smlar to Fg. 1, but
showing thelinstrument closed and the tone arm in lowered position. i
In the eubodiment illustrated, the tone arm and reproducer 1 are mounted on a tone arm carrying platform composed of a pair of depressible platform leaves 9 and 10 hinged together as at 11, one of the leaves, as 10, being also hinged to the casing 5 which houses the turntable 7, the tone arm 1 being carried by the leaf 9. The turntable 7 is rotated by a motor, not shown, as usual.
At 13 is a lid or cover, hinged to the upper edge of the casing 5, andconnected to the platform leaf 9 at 14:, through the jointed link, or stay, 12. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the lid 13 and the platform leaves 9 and' 10 are in the positions taken when a record isto be played. When the lid is lowered to close the casing, the platform composed of leaves 9 and 10 will be displaced from osition alongside the main stationary plat orm 3, the leaves 9 and 10 being depressed and lowered alongside the turntable into the casing, so as to assume positions as illustrated in Fig. 3. Beneath the leaf 9 is a guide 15, to support said leaf as it rises and falls; As illustrated the guide 15 is curved, contacts with the free end of leaf 9 in the latter s travel and coacts to keep this leaf generally level as it rises and falls.
' A catch 16 is pivoted to the leaf 9, and two flat springs 17 are arranged across the hinge joint 11 on the underside of the leaves 9 and 10, one on each leaf, said springs overlappng, when the leaves are in raised postion, to prevent breaking of said joint. i metal strip 18 may be attached to the main platform 3 to cover the joint between the same and the leaves 9 and 10, and to act as a stop for the Upward movement of the leaves. The latch 16 may be turned to engage the metal strip 18 to support the leaves in raised position.
By the above described Construction, it will be perceived that when the tone arm is in elevated, or playing position, it is in position which will prevent a lid of slight depth, such as the lid 13, from being brought to position closing the casing and housing the llO tone arm, because the tone arm then oecupies the general plane which Would have to be occupied by the lid of slght depth. But when the lid is closed, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the platform leaves 9 and 10, are in depressed position and they support the tone arni in depressed position relative to said general plane and thereby permit the shallOW lid 13 to occupy said plane to close the cas ing and house the apparatus. In consequence the entire casing, including the lid, may be made of small depth, and the lid may be very shallow.
lfihus by the above described construction are accompiished, among others, the objects heroin referred to.
Since certain changes may be made in the above constructon and dii'erent embodimente of the invention could be made Without depa-rting from the scope thereot, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accoinpanyng drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
lt is also to be understoed that the following clains are intended to cover all ot' the generic and specific feat-ures of 'the invention herein described, and all stateinents of the scope of the invention which, as a inater of language, might be said to tall therebetween.
Having described my invention, v-. 'hat I claim as new and desi-re to secure by Letter-s Patent is 1. ln a sound reproducing machine, the combination -With a turntable, a tone arm and a easing tor housing said turntableand said tone arm and including a lid adapted to move into and out of closed position, covering said table and arm, of a tone arm carrying platform displaceable 'relatively to said turntable'troin position supporting the tone arm in playing position in the plane occupied by said lid When the lid is closed, to position supporting the tone arm in depressed position relative to said plane to ermit said lid to occup y said plane when closed, and means connecting said lid and platform so that opening and closing novementof said lid ei'ects said displaceinent of said platform.
in a sound reproducing machine, the combination With a turntable, a tone arm and u casing :for housing said turntable and said tone arin and including a lid adapted to move into and out of closed position cover-ing said table and arm, of a ,platform adapted to be raised andlowered relatively to and alongside said turntable inside the casing conprising a pair-ot' depressible platform leaves hinged together, one of said leaves being hinged 'to said casing, said tone arm being carried by the other leaf.
In a sound reproducing machine, the combination With a turntable, a tone arm and a casing for housing said 'turntable and said 'tone arin and including a lid `ada pted to move into and out of closed 'position covcring said table and arm, of a platform adap-'ed to be raised 'and loWered 'relatively to and alongside said turntable inside the comprising a 'pairof dep'essible plat- 'torin leaves hinged together, one of said leaves being hinged to said'casing, said'tone rin being carried bythe other lea', a curvcd u-ide adapted to support the tone arm car- 'ying leat as it rises and :t'a lls and means ncluding a jointed stay connecting the tone arincarryi-ng leaf With sa id lid and adapted to raise and 'lower said platform leaves as the lid is opened and closed.
In testimony Whereot I 'have signed my name to this specification.
THOMAS HOUGH.
