'PAsQUeLn DELLA gonna, or PHILA ELPHIA, rnnnsynvanm CABINET Eon rr'IoNoGR-APrrsANn THE IKE,
Application filed January 24, 1923. Serial No. 614,530.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAs UALF. DELLA ToRRn, a subject of the King of Italy, (having resided in the United States one year last past and having declared his intentions of becoming a citizen thereof,) residing in thecity and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Cabinet for Phonographs' and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a cabinet or case of a phonograph, talking machine or the like, and consists in adapting the top of the cover thereof to form a table which is movable out of the'paths of the cover in its opening and closing motions so as not to be engaged by said cover nor to disturb an object which may be placed on the table.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities"thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited tothe specific details shown and described,'as long as they are within thespirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of the portion of a cabinet embodying my invention. 1
Figure 2 represents a vertical section thereof on line 22 Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents a similar section thereof, the cover being raised or open.
Figure 4 represents a front elevation of detached portions.
Figure 5 represents a bottom plan view of the table of the device.
Figure 6 represents a transverse section on line 66 Figure 5, on an enlarged scale.
Figure 7 represents a perspective view of the locking mechanism of the table.
Figure 8 represents a vertical section of the hinge portion of the cover.
Figure 9 is a cross section through the table and cover showing the hinge construction.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings,
1 designates the top portion of a cabinet of a phonograph or the like, and 2 designates the cover or lid thereof, the latter being hinged thereto as at 3 and being of chambered or hollow form.
4 designates the upper member or wall of the cover, the same forming a table on which may be placed a vase, ornament, figure, or other object so as to be stood and supported thereon, itbeing noticed that said niemberis separate from the surrounding side wall 5 of said cover leaving at the top of the cover the opening 6 which may be occupied by said table in the normalposition of the cover, so as to close said opening at the top proper of the cover, as most plainly shown in Figure 2. The table 4 is slidingly supported on standards or brackets 7 which are of double elbow form, the lower horizontal limbs 8 whereof are secured to the horizontal rim 9 in the top portion of the cabinet and the upper horizontal limbs 10 are freely fitted in guides 10*which are stationarily secured to the underside of the table 4 v and slidable therewith. V 1
The brackets 7 are strengthened by the curved or angular braces 11 which are secured respectively to the limbs and sides of said brackets, the effect of which isevident. At orabout the centre of the table 4 on the underside thereof is secured the forward end of'the strap or plate 12, the rear end whereof is connected with one leaf 13 of the hinge'14, the other leaf 15' whereof issecured to the inner face of the sidefwall of the cover 2, it being seen that said hinge 14 of the strap-is eccentric to the hinge 3 of-the cover.
Pivotally connected with the underside of the table is the spring pressed catch 16 on whose side is the detent 17 which. is adapted to enter the recess 18- in the adjacent upper limb 10 of a bracket 7, and so hold the table immovable when it is in the position shown in Figure 3, the cover then being in raised or open condition.
It will be seen that in the normal condition of the cover, the table 4 forms a closing top therefor and is adapted to support the vase, etc., as shown in Figures 1 and'Q.
When the cover is to be opened it is raised as usual, turning on the hinge 3. Then the hinge 14 is carried with the cover, in the present case to the right, and with it the strap 12 whereby it draws the table 4 to the right, when said table especially at its front recedes from the adjacent side wall of the cover 2 whereby asthe cover describes its circle said wall is removed from contact with the table and so passes freely over the latter and consequently over the vase or object on the table without contacting with said object or upsetting 0r knocking it from the table, as apparent in Figure 3. The interior of the cabinet is then ac- V cessible as usual in phonographs or the'like.
In closing the (over the catch 16 having been duly operated to be unlocked from the upper limb of'the bracketgthe cover rides freely over the object and table withoutcon- 7 prises the upper member or wall of the tacting therewith or disturbing it, and the table is returned to its normal position, in the present case, to the left by the action of the strap 12 which is moved in similar direction by the lowering of the cover. Then as the cover closes, the opening 6 is positioned as to receive thetable 4 when the latter enters said opening, and so said opens ing and consequently the top of the cover is fullyclosed, said table now agaln comtable, and means connected with said cover and table for moving the latter When the cover is opened and closed out of the paths of the same without having-said table and an object thereon contacted by-said cover. 2. A cover for a cabinet of the character stated having in its top an opening, and a separate section for said top which is adapted'to occupy said opening as a closure therefor forming a table for supporting an object thereon, and means hinged to said cover and connected with said section adapted to operate said table in the opening'and closing motions of said cover Wherebyit is removed out of the paths of said'cover in sai motions. I I r 3. A cover for a cabinet of the character stated having in its topan opening and a separate section which is adapted to occupy said opening and formingv a closure therefor, and a supporting table, means on the cabinet for sustaining said table, and a connection with said table and cover whereby the latter in its" opening and closing motions is adapted to operate said tablein the cover clear of the latter in said motions.
t. A cover for a cabinet of the character stated having in its top an opening, and a section separate from the surrounding side Wall of the cover adapted to occupy said opening and form 'a closurethereforand comprise a table, means on the cabinet for movably sustaining said table, guides on V the table fora member of sai-dY-means, and
a hinged connection for said table with said cover.
5. A cover stated having in its top an opening, a secfor a cabinet of the character 1m tion separate from thev surrounding side Wall of the cover adapted to occupy said opening and form a closuretherefor and comprising a table, meanson the cabinet for'moi ably sustaining said table. guides on the table for a member ofsaid means. and a locking device for the table adapted to be engaged with said member.
