Cases.-The turntable 1 of a portable gramophone is mounted close to the bottom 4 of the box 6 and is friction-driven by a motor 7 arranged either wholly or in part above the level of the turntable, so that space is provided above the turntable to house records when the machine is not in use. An amplifying horn mouth is formed by two plates 14, 15 hinged together, these members in the closed position lying close together to form the lid of the casing. The turntable spindle 2 is elongated so that a number of records can be stored with their apertures over the spindle. A friction wheel 8 transmits the drive from the spring motor 7. The tone-arm 10 is mounted in a bearing 11 at the smaller end of a sound conduit 12. This sound conduit 12 extends laterally across the bottom of the box with an outlet 13 extending upwards and forwardly and its shape is such that the tone-arm 10 can be swung round to lie close against the back of the box when not in use. The plate 14 is hinged to the upper rear edge of the box 5 and in its lowered position forms a lid. The second plate 15 is hinged to the rear edge of the plate 14 and forms an outer lid when lowered to lie flat upon the plate 14. The plates 14, 15 are movable together and the plate 15 can move relative to the plate 14 to a limited extent so that these plates form the upper and lower walls of a horn mouth. An aperture 17, Fig. 4, in the plate 14 enables connection to be made between the end 13 of the sound conduit 12 and the horn mouth. The outer plate 15 is provided with sector-shaped wings 18 which in the closed position lie within and against the side walls of the box 5. Catches 19, Fig. 1, on the inside of the wings 18 can be turned to prevent the plates 14, 15 collapsing when the machine is in use. Small metal plates 20 are also secured at the lower edges of the wings 18 to project beneath the edges of the plate 14 so that the horn mouth is movable as a whole. To provide lateral taper of the horn mouth, a curved strip 21 is secured to the undersurface of the plate 15. A slit 24 in the plate 14 enables the strip 21 to enter the body of the box 5 when the machine is closed.
