CRACKER CAN, BOX, AND THE LIKE, AND DISPLAY OR SHOW FRONT THEREFOR.
Patented Feb. 24, rats.
Serial No. 759,574-
Application filed April 7, 1913.
To all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. Gonmrax,
a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis. State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cracker Cans, Boxes. and the like, and Display or Show Fronts Therefor, of which the following is "a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view o'f'a can embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a broken vertical sectional View of the can on the line 22, Fig, 1; Fig. 3 is a yertical sectional yiew on the line 33, Fig. 2, looking at the rear of my new display or showfront; Fig. 4 is a detail cross sectional View on the line H, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail somewhat enlarged cross sectional view, partly broken away, on the line 5- -5, Fig.
3; and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional View on the line 6 6, Fig. 3. g
This invls'ntion relates to certain new and useful improvements in cracker cans, boxes, and the like and display or show fronts therefor, the objects of my invention being erative position in the can or box; to pro to provide a can or box of the kind stated with a display or show front which may bodily, or as an entirety, be readily and quickly placed into, or removed from, op-
ride a can or box of the kind stated with a removable display or show front having a slidablc spring-pressed door or panel, where by, whenthe display or show front is in on erative position in the can or box, access may be easily had into the interior thereof for the removal of its contents or other pur pose; to provide a can or box of the kind stated with a removable display or show front having a transparent panel, whereby when the display or show-front is in operative position in the can or box, a View of the interior thereof and of its contents may be conveniently had; to provide a can or box of the kind stated with a display or show-front having a removable transparent panel and a removable normally springpressed slidable door or panel; and to improve generally upon cans or boxes of the kind stated and their display or show-fronts.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and
v combination of parts, all as will. hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates a can comprising a body portion preferably of suitable sheet metallic material, said body portion having a pair of parallel spaced-apart side walls 1 1, a front wall 2 cut away wi hin its area-to provide preferably a plu *Lty of elongated rectangular openings, as at 3 and a, abase or bottom. wall 5 soldered or otherwise suitably fixed to said walls l-1 and front wall 2at their lower ends, and a cover or lid 6 hinged to a rear wall not shown.
At its upper end, front wall 2 is prefer ably suitably bent and doubled rearwardly upon itself, as at 2 shown particularly in Fig. 2, to provide between side walls 1.-1 adjacent the top thereof a transverselyextending channeled or grooved member 7' opening or presented downwardly and in which is adapted to removably lit the upper end of my new display or show-front B which, as an entirety, is adapted to removably fitwithin can A and between side walls -1-1 flatwise and against the rear face of front wall 2, as also shown particularly in Fig. 2. r
The body-portion of display or showfront B is in the form substantially of a frame) and comprises a pair of parallel spaced-apart substantially U-shaped or grooved preferably sheet metallic members 8-8 having their legs or groo es presented inwardly, an uppercross or horizontallyd sposed preferably sheetmetallic member 9 soldered or otherwise fixedat its ends to the upperends of said upright members 8-8, a lower substantially U-shaped or grooved preferably sheet metallic horizontally-disposed or cross member 10 soldered or other wise fixed at itsends to, and on the rear face of, the lower ends of saidnpright members 8 8, the legs or groove of said member 10 being presented upwardly, and an interme diate substantially U-shaped or grooved preferably sheet metallic horizontally-disposed or cross member 11 soldered or otherwise fixed at its ends to, and on the rear face of, said upright members 88 at a suitable point approximately midway their length, the legs or groove of said intermediate cross-inember 11 being presented downwardly. f Upright members 8- 8 of show-front B ticul having their legs presented inwardly, form a verticaliy-disposed slide or guide-way in h slidahly fits a removable preferably rm: iic or door 12 preferably pro- 1 d on. its outer face and adjacent the up per thereof with a hinged or other suitable manipulating handle 13, as shown parin Fig. 1. At its upper edge, panel or door 12 is rearwardly bent and then dQWt vardly flanged, as at 14, as shown arly in Fig. 3, to provide a wall or a utment, at 15, against which are adapted to removably press or abut the upper ends of a pair of oppositely-disposed spring members 16--16 adapted to maintain door or panel in. uppermost position in its slideway and, when display-front- B is in operative position in can A, in normal position closing upper opening 3 in front wall 2, theopposite or lower ends of spring members 1616 preferably removably fitting in suitable horizontally-disposed tubular openings formed preferably, as shown particu Fig. 6, by means of suitable angular or bent metallic pieces or members 17 soldered or otherwise fixed at their'opposite ends to the rear face of upright or slide-forming members 88 and the upper face of said intermediate recessed or grooved cross-member 11. This cross member 11 with lower recessed or grooved cross member 10, the legs or grooves thereof bein oppositely-presented, form a horizontally-dis osed slide or guide-way in which is adapte to remov ably fit a glass or other transparent panel 18 through which, when display-front B is in operative position in can A, a view of the interior, or of the contents, of can A may be 'had.' At one end, each of said cros'smembers 10 and 11 preferably has its groove closed as by means of respective integral flanged portions 19, see particularly Fig. 5, glass panel 18 being, when display-front B is in inoperative position or removed from can A, endwise slidably removable from its. slideway formed by said members 10 and 11 at the opposite ends thereof. Displayfront B being in operative osition in can A, access to the interior tiiereof may be readily had through openin 3 by slidably moving panel 12 downwardlyin its slideway and against the resiliency of said spring members 16-16, such access being particularly desirable and advantageous when, as is usually the case, cans A are stacked or arranged, (me upon another, as will be well understood.-
Suitably hinged, as at 20, to base or bottom wall and within can A,as shown par- -ly in Figs. 2 and 4, isa suitable, prefr spring or resilient locking member 21 at its forward end an upturned poradapted, when spring member 21 is in normal position, or in the position thereof slwwn in full lines in Fig. 2, to releasably 1,088, 1&5
arly in r I amiaware that minor changes in the 0011 of my invention.
' what I claim and desire-to secure by Letters 1 can and adapted to removably fit within said impinge or bear against lower cross-member 10 of display-front B, thereby pressing play-front B flatwise outwardly or fun:- wardly against the rear facero'f front villi and securely holding or locking dip front B in operative position in can A its upper end within the groove or ch of. transverse member 7. By throwing moving spring member 21 to i-noperlw osition, or to the position thereof as showd by dotted lines in Fig. 2, displa front B may be rearwardly or inwardly idably moved from engagement with member 7, d also shown by dotted lines in Fi 2, thus easily removed from can A, w ereupflfli the interior of'can A may be easily cleaned; glass panel 18 may be'removed from its taining frame and cleaned, or, 'in case breakage thereof, a new panel substitu therefor, and panel or door 12, for re or substitution, if necessary, removed its slide-way by slightly depressing the i so that its manipulat-in handle 14 may upwardly and outwar l behind or'to rear of upper cross-mem r 9, spring mm bers 16-16 being also readily removed from, or placed into, operative position When display-front B is in operative poli tion in can A, it will be seen that the aid wall 1 of can A adjacent the open side of slide-way or frame in which glass anel fits forms, in effect, a. closure for t e open, end of said frame and thereby holds pantie 18 against removal, and that the rear wall P" of grooved or channeled member 7 of frofi wall 2 of can A correspondingly preven the removal of up 1' door or panel 12.
My new can an its display front may he cheaply and economically manufactured, all! it will also be noted that by having displlf front B and its several parts so se stately. removable, one or more parts thereo may b0" separately or independently removed or raw, placed, the cost of repairsor renewal being, thereby reduced to a minimum. 7
struction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new can and displl or show-front may be made and substitutei for those herein shown and described'withe. out departing from the nature and principld Having thus described my invention,
