a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of. California, have invented a certain new anduseful Improvement in Powder and Puff Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to toilet articles, and more particularly to a container for powder and a pufi.

An object of the present invention is to provide a container having separate co1npartments, one for the powder, and another compartment for the puff to prevent the puff from being completely enveloped in the powder during the handling of the cona relatively large amount of powder. 1

Another object of the present invention is to provide a container body with an ad-' justable cover part having a mirror thereon, and adapted "to-swing up to brin the 11111- ror into use, and to provide a body constructed to support the cover part when raised without tilting the container.

The invention further aims at the provision of a container having superposed com partments, and a novel hinge and clasp structure for uniting the parts of-the con,

tainer for individually opening and closing the compartments.

A still further object of. the present in; vention is to provide a container of relatively simple whichis adapted particularly for travelers use, which comprises relatively few parts, and dwhich may be economically manufactu re The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described, and in part understood, from the followingdetailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Referring to this drawing, wherein-like parts are designated by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, 10 designates the body or base portion of the container which may be formed of metal, glass, porcelain or any other suitable material.

The upper compartment or casing 12 is closed by a removable cover 17 in the form of a disk seated upon the upper edge of the casing 15 and-being provided with a depending inwardly offset flange 18 adapted to bind in the upper end of the casing 12.

The back wall of the body 10 is PIOVlClBd, adjacent toits upper edge, with a pair of spaced-apart outstanding lugs 19 between which is fitted the lower rolled over end of a hinge strap 20 forming an eye to receive a pivot pin 2]., carried byv the lugs 19. The strap 20 extends upwardly about the bead 13, and is soldered,'or otherwise suitably secured against the back wall of the upper compartment 12. The upper end of the strap 20 is hingedly connected to the cover 17 by means of a strip 22 Which is soldered or otherwise secured to the cap 17 and connected to the strap 20 by a pivot pin 28. The

upper part or section of the container may thus be swung upwardly upon the body 10 to open the latter while the cap or cover 17 is retainedin closed position. The cover 17 may also be raised to open the upper compartment without uncovering the contents inthe body 10.

The upper part of the container is held closed against the-lower part by means of a spring tongue 24: secured to the casing 12 and extending downwardly about the bead l3 and provided with an apertured lower end. The body 10 has on its front wall an outwardly extending projection or lug 25 adapted to fit in the aperture of the spring -tongue 24' to secure the hinged parts to- I gether.

The cover 17 is in a like manner held in locked position upon the casing 12 by a second spring tongue 26 which is se- [cured to the cover 17 and provided with an opening near its it'ree endadapted to receive a lug or projection 27 which is pressed or stamped outwardly from the upper end of the spring tongue 24, The tongue 26 is arranged in overlapping relation with respect to the upper end of the spring tongue 24 so that the latter not only provides means for engaging the body 10, but also means for engaging the spring tongue 26 o'f-the cover 17.

As the bottom 11 is relatively heavy, and as the side and end walls of the body part 10 are relatively thick at their lower ends, the body is given suiiicient stability to support the upper part when in raised position without tilting the container.

The upper compartment may be opened by lifting the spring tongue 26 out of en-- without departing from the spirit of this invention, and being restricted only by the scope of the following, claim.

I claim v. 1

In a container, the combination of a body -part, having an outstanding projection, a

hinged part mounted on the body part, a cover hingedly mounted on the hinged part, a spring tongue carried upon the hinged part and having an opening at its lower end for engagement with the projection of the body part to hold the hinged part in closed position thereon and providednear its upper end with an outstanding projection, and a second spring tongue carried by said cover and having an opening therein adapted to engage the projection of said first spring tongue.
