Description
H. C. ROPER.-
COMBINED TOBACCO CAN AND MATCH BOX.
' v APPLICATION FILED FEB. I0. 1915. 1,209,208. Patented De0.19,1916.
I ib e nforrf 1 law/ 6; 720 76 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY G. ROPER, 0F .ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINED TOBACCO-CAN AND MATCH-BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. ROPE'R, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tobacco-Cans and Match-Boxes, of which the following is'a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in combined tobacco cans and match boxes, wherein a tobacco can is provided with a fixed bottom and a movable bottom, so that there may be held therebetween matches and the like, the primary object of my invention being to construct a single container for both tobacco and matches, and to provide locking means for the closures of each receptacle, so that when one closure is open the other may be locked against opening.
To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed I out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanymg drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a tobacco can and match box embodying my improve ments; Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional elevation of the device taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the device; and Fig. 4 is a fragmental, longitudinal sectional elevation taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring by numerals to the accompany.-
. ing drawings: 5 designates the body portion and 6 the hinged lid of a conventional tobacco can. Formed in the body of the can near its open end and opposite to its point of hinging with the lid there is formed a boss 7, and in the lid 6 there is formeda similar boss 8. These bosses are both formed by being struck from the can and lid respectively, and serve to form a snap lock. Adjacent the lower end the can body is provided with an outstanding bead 9, which extends around the major portion of the can only, the can body from the ends of said bead being removed, as shown at 10 in Fig. l.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed February 10, 1915. Serial No. 7,399.
11 designates the can bottom, which is of inverted cup shape and provided with an outstanding bead 12 which engages in the bead 9 of the can bodyand from said bead 12 the walls 13 of thebottom extend to a crimp 14 which embraces the lower raw edge of the can body. This wall 13 and its crimped portion 14 are 'cut away, as is the can body at 10.
15 designates the removable bottom or closure for the match box which match box is formed by said inverted cup shaped bottom proper and the lid 15. This closure 15 slides between the beads 12 of the bottom 11 and has at its free end a wall 16 which is the counterpart of the lower end of the can, including the bead 9. This wall 16 serves as a handle or gripping portion for the manipulation of the'closure 15. In order to secure the closure 15 in a closed position there is formed by striking from its material a boss 17, which frictionally engages the lower margin of the can, as shown in Fig; 4. This lid carries a roughened surface 18 for convenience in striking of the smoker, but I have found that this s a'ce between the two lids may contain a b otter device, as shown by dotted lines at 19 in Fig. 2. In order that the moisture from said material may enter the body of the can, there are provided the perforations 20.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. In a combined tobacco can and match box, a can, a closure therefor, a can bottom spaced from the ends of the can, the said walls of said can and said bottom being partially removed, a closure near the open end of said bottom, means for slidably con-' name to this specification, in presence of two subscnblng witnesses.
HARRY C. ROPER.
