PHILIP A. BECKER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOX-HOLDER AND SUPPLEMENTAL DISPLAY-LID.
Application filed February 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented'a certain new and useful Improvement in Box-Holders and Supplemental Display-Lids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with boxes containing merchandise.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a. box holder and supplemental display lid designed to be utilized preferably for permitting cigars and like tobacco products to be displayed for sale on show cases, counters, and elsewhere while being kept in their original containers so as to be free of contact with the air and the collection of dust, and which is especially adapt ed to be employed in conjunction with a class of tin boxes in which cigars are sold.
The invention consists essentially of a surrounding member or band adapted to be removably mounted on the open top of the body of the box, this member having a trans parent plate hinged thereto so as to be swung to open and closed position on the box for serving as a supplemental display lid, and forms of the holder may be made including a second surrounding member adapted to be dctachably applied to the bottom of the box body in a manner whereby the lid ofthe box when removed from its top may be retained in association with the box until all its contents are dispensed.-
Another object of the invention is to provide means for permitting the bands to be detachably connected together when de sired; and still another object of the invention is to provide on the supplemental lid a stop to limit its movement when swung open on its hinge.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box holder and supplemental lid of a simple and efficient construction, and which is susceptible of being made so as to accommodate one or a number of boxes.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the
Specification of Letters Patent.

said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of box holder and supplemental display lid embodying my invention, showing the manner of its use in conjunction with a circular tin cigar box. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, partly broken away, taken vertically through one corner of the holder shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view, partly broken away, of the upper rear part of the device shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. dis a perspective view of a modification of the device.
My improved box holder consist-s essentially of a pair of surrounding bands or members 23 and 2%, which may be approximately semi-circular in shape, as indicated in Fig. l, to accommodate a single box, or substantially rectangular, as shown in Fig. i, so as to permit a number of the boxes to be held therein together with means for holding said bands adjacent the top and bottom of a box and in fixed relation to each other. When the members 23 and 24: are semi-circular two vertical sleeves 25 and 26 are provided at the corners interiorly of the rear portion of the member 23, and similar vertical sleeves 27 and 28 are provided at the corners interiorly of the rear portion of the member 24. the passages of the sleeves 25 and 2'? being in register while the passages: of the sleeves 26 and 28 are rcgistei'cd with each other. When the members and 21- are rectangular two additional vertical sleeves 29 and 30 are provided at the corners interiorly of the front portion of the member 23, and two like additional vertical sleeves 31 and 32 are provided at the corners interiorly of the front portion of the members 2i, the passages of the sleeves and 26 being respectively in register with the sleeves 2? am 28, while the passages of the sleeves 29 and 30 are respectively in register with the passages of the sleeves 31 and 32.
Serving to detachably connect the mem bers 23 and 24- together of the device shown in Fig. 1, in the pair of the complemental sleeves 25 and 2'? is removably disposed a rod member 33, and in the pair of the complemental sleeves 26 and 28. is another removable rod member 34. When these closures are in the form of the device shown in Fig. l, in the pair of the complemental sleeves and 27 is a removable rod member 35, in the complemental sleeves 26 and 28 is a removable rod member 36, in the complemental sleeves 29 and 31 is a removable rod member 37, and in the complemental sleeves and 32 is a removable rod member 38. Each of the rods is fixed in the sleeves of the upper closure and removably held in the sleeves of the lower closure. In each of these forms of the device the rods thereof are of lengths suflicient to permit the members 23 and 24 to be held thereon one above the other to freely accommodate the boxes as well as the lids which are placed under the boxes, as shown, when the goods are on sale, and to hold each of the lids under its respective body of the box, on the underside of each of the members 2A is a transverse plate, as 39, serving as means to support the lids in association with the bodies of the boxes. The upper ends of the rods 83 and 34; extend some distance above the member 23, and these extending ends are bent over at right angles, at 40 and 41, so as to be in opposed relation. The upper ends of the rods 35 and 36 of the device shown in Fig. 4 also extend some distance above the member 23, and these projecting ends are bent over at right angles, at 42 and 43, so as to be in opposition.
Adapted to be swung to open and closed positions on the members 23 of both of these forms of the device for opening and closing the open tops of the boxes, on each of these members is a plate M of glass or otherwise transparent material inclosed in a frame 41:5 preferably of metal wire, and each plate is secured in its frame by a plurality of clips, as 46. At spaced parts of the rear edge of each of the frames 4C5 are held two sleeves 47 and 48, and in these sleeves of each the forms of the device, shown in Figs. 1 and 4, are disposed the bent ends of the rods of the device, the passages of the sleeves being of sufficient diameters to allow the sleeves to freely revolve on the rods. In this manner the transparent plates and their frames are hinged to the devices.
For the purpose of permitting each of the transparent plates 4A to be conveniently moved, projecting upwardly from the rear part of each of the frames thereof is a handle 49 in the form preferably of a transverse plate so that a suitable sign, as 50, may be inscribed thereon, and extending backwardly from each of the handles, or plates 50'is a stop 51 preferably in the form of a strip adapted to contact with the band member 23 of its respective form of the device for limiting the upward movement of the transparent plate when swung by moving the handle to open the supplemental lid, the lid being closed upon the member 23 and on the open top of the box when the handle is reversely directed.
Obviously by providing a box holder and supplemental display lid as herein set forth cigars and tobacco products especially of a certain class may be advantageously kept 1n.
their original containers and displayed for sale without being subjected to the action of air and the collection of dust thereon.
In the foregoing description, I have emparting from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A box holder comprising an upper and a lower band, means permanently attached to said upper band and removably secured to said lower band for holding said bands adjacent the top and bottom of a box and in fixed relation to each other, and a transparent plate hingedly attached to the top band substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A box holder comprising an upper and a lower band, rods attached to said bands for holding same in fixed relation to each other, the portion of said rods attached to said top band projecting slightly above said band and being bent over at right angles thereto, and a cover for said box hingedly secured to said bent portions of said rods, substantially as described.
3. A box holder for boxes with removable lids comprising an upper and a lower band, rods permanently secured to said upper band and removably attached to said lower band for holding said bands in fixed relation to each other, a transparent plate hingedly secured to said upper band and angularly adjustable with relation to the open end of the box for opening and closing same, and an inwardly projecting flange on the said lower band for forming a support whereby the removable lid of the box may be held underneath its bottom.
4. In a box holder and supplemental display lid, an upper inclosing member, a lower inclosing member, hinged on the upper inclosing member for being swung to open and closed positions thereon, and rods removably connecting the inclosing members in spaced relation, sub stantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
