998,839. Producing metal tubes; rolling. C. SCHMOLE & W. OESTEN, [trading as R. & G. SCHMOLE METALWERKE]. March 29, 1962 [March 30, 1961], No. 12037/62. Headings B3A and B3M. In a method of forming integral external and internal ribs on a tube, suitable for use in a heat exchanger, the tube 8 is swaged by compound rolls 2 into external helical ribs 10 and, using a ribbed mandrel 1, into longitudinal internal ribs 9. Each roll includes a relatively thick swaging disc 7 and a number of thinner discs 4 of increasing diameter. The rolls 2 and mandrel are situated in the same longitudinal region of the pipe, and, if desired, the mandrel may be forced with helical ribs to form similar ribs on the inside of the tube.
