Abstract
957,999. Waveguide bends. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. May 30, 1962 [Oct. 23, 1961], No. 20825/62. Heading H1W. An H-plane 180 degrees bend between two rectangular waveguides 10, 12 comprises a resonant slot 24 in adjacent narrow walls 17, 14 of the guides. A distance equal to about <SP>1</SP>/ 10 th the width of the guides is left between the edge of the slot and the short-circuited ends of the guides. This imparts an inductive reactance to the slot which is compensated by decreasing its height to 80% of the width of the narrow walls. To compensate the capacitance of the bend, irises 26, 27, 28, 29 of the dimensions and in the positions shown are used. These may be replaced by inductive cylindrical or semi-cylindrical posts (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). The waveguides are separated in the vicinity of the slot by the web 22 of an I-section element whose flanges overlap the broad walls of the guides. The web is slotted in the same manner as the narrow walls of the guides.
