Abstract
In the production of sodium perborate tetrahydrate by the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and sodium metaborate in a mother liquor satuated with sodium perborate, the reaction is effected in the presence of a magnesium compound in an amount of 300 to 420 p.p.m. and an anionic surface active substance to the extent of not greater of 0.018 mols. per 1000 kgm. of mother liquor. Suitable surface active substances are palmitic, stearic, lauric, myristic and oleic acid but the requisite amount of anionic surface active agent may be present in the hydrogen peroxide fed by virtue of the production of the latter by the autoxidation of alkyl or aryl substituted anthraquinols or anthraquinhydrones. The magnesium compound employed is preferably the sulphate heptahydrate, and the addition is preferably made to the mother liquor before the hydrogen peroxide and sodium metaborate are fed thereto. Sodium perborate product is recovered by cooling the reaction liquor (the temperature of which has risen due to the reaction), down to the initial temperature, whereupon the sodium perborate produced crystallizes out. The bulk density of the product is lower than 0.7 grams per c.c. Specification 911,664 is referred to.
