Abstract

933,229. Two-part couplings. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. April 12, 1962 [June 26, 1961], No. 14091/62. Class 38 (1). A coaxial connector provided with a bayonet catch and a sleeve with splines which prevent relative rotation after engagement, has a spring which acts as the outer connector of the plug portion and which ejects this part when the bayonet catch is released. The socket part, Fig. 2, consists of a socket contact 18 mounted in an insulating insert 14 which is partially enclosed by a metal cover 24 which is threaded to enable the connector to be fixed to a panel, and carries at its forward end two bayonet pins 38 and a collar 33 with grooves 34 separated by lands 35, Fig. 4 (not shown). In the plug part, Fig. 3, the central core 44 of a coaxial cable 33 is attached to a pin 48 which is mounted in an insulating insert 40 enclosed in a metal case 68 which carries at its forward end a spring-loaded sleeve 87 which is prevented from rotating relative to the plug body by means of splines which engage grooves on the outside 81 of the plug case. The outer braid of the cable 13 is gripped by a bushing 49 which screws on to the covering 47 and a metal sleeve 57 holds the braid in contact with a helical metal spring 54, held in position by tongues 72, which acts as the outer contact and also as the ejection means. The inside of the metal case 68 is provided with an annular groove 92 to which two slots 93 lead. When the plug is inserted in the socket the pins 38 enter slots 93, sleeve 87 abuts collar 33 and spring 54 abuts the end of the socket case 37. On further insertion of the plug the springs 54 and 83 are compressed. When the bayonet pins 38 enter the groove 92 the plug can be rotated in either direction through an angle of 45 degrees, at which position the sleeve 87 snaps forward due to engagement of its splines with the grooves on the collar 33. This prevents the connector from being rotated. The plug is removed by pulling back the sleeve 87 and rotating the plug until the pins 38 enter the slots 93. The spring 54 then ejects the plug portion. The cable is sealed by packings 77, 78 and a seal 95 is provided which abuts the conical face of the socket case 37 when the plug is engaged. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), a sealing gland for use with flat coaxial cable is described.
