Abstract

An alloy steel has the following percentage composition, by weight:- .Ni.............10-23 .Mo.............2-30 .Co.............2-30 .Fe....the balance and more than any... ...other single constituent.... The product of the numerical values of the Mo and Co percentages being between 10 and 100. The alloy may contain Cr 0-5, Mn 0-1, Ca and/or Mg 0-0.1, B 0-0.1 and Zr 0-0.25. It may also contain C 0-0.15, Be 0-1, Si 0-2, Cu 0-6, W 0-7, Nb 0-3, Ti 0-3, Al 0-3, V 0-6, N 0-0.2, up to 7 in total. When Cr is present, Ni plus Cr should not exceed 23%. The steel is brought to the martensitic condition by cooling to room temperature after hot working or a solution treatment at 700-1090 DEG C. for 0.1-10 hours. It may be necessary to initiate the martensitic transformation by cold-working with or without refrigeration to -196 DEG C. The hardness is then increased by ageing at 260-590 DEG C., e.g. for 0.1-100 hours.
