Abstract

An alloy having high damping properties at elevated temperatures comprises over 3% Ni, at least one of Fe, Cr and Co, totalling, with Ni, at least 80%, the amount of Cr when present not exceeding 30% and also containing up to 4% of at least one of the elements Ti, Al, Be, and Cu as precipitation hardening elements and Si, Mn, C, S, P, N and O as impurities and additives, the alloy having been solution treated for 1/2 -4 hours at 1700-2000 DEG F. and aged for 1/2 -2500 hours at 1100-1600 DEG F. to produce a cellular precipitate comprising a matrix and lamellar colonies, the latter constituting at least 3% of any cross-section. The alloy may also contain up to 5% of Mo or W, 0-3% Zr, 0-6% Hf, 0-1.5% Nb or Ta, and B, if present, should not exceed 0.002%. Specifications 806,183 and 886,922 are referred to.
