Abstract

927,954. Two-part couplings. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Jan. 24, 1962 [Jan. 26, 1961], No. 3103/61. Class 38 (1). A connector for plug and socket type electric couplings comprises a moulded connector block 1 made of a resilient insulating material such as polyethylene, nylon or polypropylene and contact members 6 each of which can be pushfitted in bores formed in the connector block, each bore having a recess 4 which retains a coresponding retaining portion 10 formed between the stem 7 and the pin 11 of a contact member. A neck 5 is provided at the upper edge of the recess 4 and is distended by a tapered lead-in from the stem to the retaining portion when the contact is introduced rearwardly to the socket. This may be done by pulling the contact by a conductor soldered to the stem end. When the contact is in the position shown the resilient neck prevents its release. Where the retaining portion is spherical the bores are made sufficiently loose to make the contact self-aligning. In a multiple arrangement the thickness of the neck is non-uniform the thin portions being opposite adjacent bores so as to allow " give " when the contact member is inserted. A tool is also provided to eject contact members out of the bores.
