Articles are placed in a mandrel, the mandrel and articles are wrapped leaving an open end, the mandrel is withdrawn and the package finally closed. The final closure may be effected by flattening the wrapper mouth and providing a sealing strip. The mandrels a, of open channel shape, are fed from a return conveyer 6, Figs. 11, 12 on to a conveyer 5 running beneath a holder 9 for articles to be wrapped. The plunger 12 which feeds them on to the conveyer 5 also places a stiffening insert b from a magazine 11 into each mandrel. Articles from the holder are placed by means not described, in the mandrels which are then transferred by pushers 15, 17 to a further conveyer 18 where another insert d is laid on the articles. Plungers 22, 27 carry the filled mandrels through conventional folding apparatus 25-30 in which a wrapper 24 is first folded to tubular form about each mandrel and has one end closed and sealed. A reciprocating gripper 33 withdraws each mandrel from the package, the contents being retained by a member 32 and the mandrels sliding down a shoot 34 to the return conveyer 6. The open package end is then folded by conventional means 37 to produce a seam 38 which is sealed by a strip 39, folded by a pair of jaws 43 initially about a removable bar 44 and finally about the seam.
