995,164. Packaging delicate objects. M. SCHMIDT. Nov. 2, 1962 [Nov. 8, 1961], No. 41596/62. Heading B8C. Delicate objects such as Christmas tree balls are packaged in a plastics bag containing air at superatmospheric pressure to protect them. The bags may be formed from a tube 3 which passes through rollers 4, to flatten it and then to a cutter 5 and a welder 6. Each bag is delivered by a suction picker arm 9 to a suction cup 12 on an intermittently moving chain 13 and is engaged by another suction cup 12 on another chain 15 so that it is held open while the objects 16 to be packaged therein are delivered from a series of hoppers 17, one from each hopper. Each filled bag is then received by grippers 26 on a carriage 25 and in one embodiment the bag is closed by inserting the open end thereof between two welding rods which form a seam 29 near to the open end and are then drawn down the bag so as to compress the air therein. When the rods reach the objects they make another seal 30. Alternatively the bag may be raised in relation to the rods. In another form, the welding rods are replaced by rollers with ridges, the rollers progressing towards the bag base and the ridges forming two seams as before. A continuous weld can also be formed by smooth surface rollers.
