Abstract

686,078. Pocketing-machines. LEVER BROS. & UNILEVER, Ltd. June 29, 1950 [July 9, 1949], No. 16240/50. Class 94(i) In a method of or machine for packing articles or substances, in which a tube of wrapping material is flattened and sealed transversely at spaced points and the article or substance is inserted between successive sealing operations, the ears formed above and below each transverse seam are squeezed and sealed to form laterallyextending, flat, triangular portions. Completed packages of the form shown in Fig. 8 may then be separated from the tube by cutting through the transverse seams 22. The triangular portions may be left projecting, folded flat against the sides of the package (see Fig. 9 not shown) or partially cut off. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a strip of heatsealable wrapping material is fed from a roll 1 and formed into a tube of rectangular cross-section by co-operating guides 2 and 3, the edges of the strip being sealed together by heated wheels 4, 5 to form a projecting seam 6. The tube then passes through a sleeve 7, against which it may be pressed by air under pressure introduced through the guide 2, whereby the seam 6 is folded flat. A transverse seam is then produced by jaws 8, 9 and the four ears thus formed flattened and sealed by jaws 10-13. The flattening of the tube may be assisted by movable guides 14, 15. The jaws 8, 9 may be arranged to leave a small unsealed portion, through which air can escape, which portion is subsequently sealed by auxiliary jaws 19, 20, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively, the jaws 8, 9 may be closed in stages. The substance or article to be packed is then inserted through a tube 18, the tube is moved downwardly by grippers 16, 17 and the operations repeated to form the top closure of the filled package and the bottom closure of the succeeding package. If block-shaped articles are to be packed, the sealing wheels 4, 5 are located immediately above the transverse sealing jaws so that the seam 6 is left open as long as possible to allow the escape of air.
