Abstract

Microporous light weight building blocks are made by mixing a gelifying substance, which is a clay mineral activated with an alkali electrolyte in the hot, with a particulate substance containing lime (e.g. quicklime, slaked lime, cement) and a particulate filling substance (e.g. common ground trass ground tuff, fly ash, ground slag, cinders), homogenising the mixture in the hot with water, casting the resulting gel into moulds and steaming the moulds in an autoclave at a pressure of at least 7 atmospheres. An inorganic or organic fibrous filling substance, e.g. glass wool, slag wool, asbestos, paper pulp, chaff or synthetic fibre, may also be incorporated. Sulphite waste liquor may be used to stabalize the initial mixture. In Example 1, activated highly viscous montmorillomite clay is mixed with ground trass and paper pulp in water, steam is passed into the mixture and Portland cement and ground quicklime added to give a homogeneous creamlike mass which is cast into moulds and autoclosed. To reduce the water absorption capacity of the blocks, they may be impregnated with soluble glass or other artificial resin solution.
