Abstract

A mortar composition comprises a dry mix of a heat-expanded lightweight aggregate having a density of 3 to 20 lb./cu. ft., filler, hydrated lime, cement, cellulose ether additive, and an added surface-active agent, the filler and the hydrated lime being in the ratio of approx 4:1 by wt., and the amount of cellulose ether additive being less than 0.1% by wt. of the composition. The lighteight aggregate may be vermiculite and/or perlite of density about 7 lb./cu. ft. in which case the weight ratio of cement to the aggregate should be about 2.5:1. The surface-active agent is preferably an aerating agent, e.g. a hydrolysed protein in spray dried form, an alkyl aryl sulphonate or an ethylene oxyalkyl phenol. The cement is preferably Portland and the filler ground limestone or whiting. The dry mix is mixed with water before use as a lightweight plaster or cement.
