Abstract

In a method of making nickel carbonyl in which carbon monoxide is reacted with a liquid feed stream comprising an aqueous mixture of ammonia and a water-soluble nickel compound at temperatures of at least 75 DEG C. under super atmospheric pressure, the liquid feed stream is continuously introduced and contacted in a reaction zone with carbon monoxide fed at a gas space velocity of at least 1000 volumes per unit volume of reaction zone space per hour and the reaction products are continuously removed from the reaction zone. Preferably the total liquid fed to the reaction zone is maintained at a liquid space velocity of from 0.5 to 10 volumes per unit volume of reaction space per hour. The mole ratio of ammonia to nickel may be from 6 to 10. The nickel compound used may be a hexammine nickel complex or a nickel halide. In a modification two or more feed streams of reactant may be used. Comparative examples are given.
