1462580 Ethylene oxide production INST NEFTEKHIM PROTSESS IM AKAD JUG MAMEDAL AKAD NAUK AZERBAIDZHAN SSR 6 Aug 1975 [6 Aug 1974 (2)] 32796/75 Heading C2C A process for the production of ethylene oxide comprises reacting together ethylene and oxygen in the presence of carbon dioxide, the reactants being in a volume ratio of from 5 to 15 of ethylene, to from 10 to 15 of oxygen to from 75 to 85 of carbon dioxide. Preferably the reaction is performed at a pressure of from 35 to 50 atm. The reaction may be performed in the presence of a silver catalyst on a carrier. In order that the concentration of the desired product may be raised, it is recommended that the unreacted ethylene and the unreacted oxygen be recovered from the reaction mixture and the unreacted ethylene be subjected to oxidation with the unreacted oxygen with the aid of a silver catalyst on a carrier in the presence of carbon dioxide in a volume ratio of the components of 7À0 to 7À4 unreacted ethylene to 12À5 to 12À9 unreacted oxygen to 79À7 to 80À5 carbon dioxide at a temperature of from 260 to 280 C. and a pressure of from 35 to 50 atm., said components forming an upward flow which moves in a counter flow at a speed of 5 m./sec. with respect to said catalyst.
