Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble dyes of formula: <FORM:0852396/IV (c)/1> where A1 and A11 are alkylene radicals and may be the same or different, R1 and R11 are substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicals and may be the same or different provided that they do not contain carboxylic or sulphonic acid groups, Z is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, trifluoromethyl or acidylamino and X and X1 are hydrogen or halogen and may be the same or different. They are made by diazotizing appropriate nitranilines and coupling with the desired component or by acylating appropriate N- di- (hydroxyalkyl)- dyes with acylating agents corresponding to R1 or R11. Specified for A1 an A11 are ethylene and trimethylene. Specified for R1 and R11 are methyl, chloro- and cyanomethyl, ethyl, b -chloroethyl, propyl, isopropyl and phenyl. Specified for Z are chlorine, methyl, ethyl and acetyl-, propionyl- and methylsulphonylamino. Specified for X and X1, when halogen, are chlorine and bromine. The dyes dye artificial fibres, e.g. cellulose acetate rayon, cellulose triacetate, polyhexamethylene adipamide and polyethylene terephthalate fibres, preferably by a dispersed process, red shades being obtained. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing polyester fibres. In the Provisional Specification A1 and A11 may be substituted the X-chloromethyl-ethylene group being specified. Specification 422,843 is referred to.
