Abstract

In the manufacture of viscose yarn, incrustation of the spinneret orifices is inhibited by incorporating into the viscose at any stage of its preparation and/or into the acid coagulating bath a quaternary ammonium compound having the formula <FORM:0840902/IV(a)/1> where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 6-22 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkylene radical having 2 or 3 carbon atoms, R11 is an alkyl radical having 1-3 carbon atoms, X is a halogen atom and x and y are integers each being at least one and having a sum equal to between 2 and 50. The quaternary ammonium compounds may be prepared by reacting primary aliphatic amines having 6-22 carbon atoms in the molecule with ethylene or propylene oxide and reacting the tertiary amines so produced with an alkyl halide having 1-3 carbon atoms. Suitable primary aliphatic amines are hexylamine, octylamine, decylamine, dodecylamine, tetradecylamine, hexadecylamine, octadecylamine, octadecadienylamine and octadecenylamine and mixtures of these compounds resulting from the amination and reduction of fatty acids produced by the hydrolysis of animal and vegetable oils, such as tallow, coconut oil, soybean oil and cottonseed oil, and by distillation of tall oil. When added to the viscose, 0.02-0.5% by weight, based on the weight of the viscose, of the quaternary ammonium compound is preferably incorporated and when added to the acid coagulating bath 0.02-0.1% by weight may be used. The quaternary ammonium compound may be added at one or more of the viscose preparation stages, as for example, to the chemically prepared wood pulp used in the manufacture of the viscose, or prior to or during shredding of the alkali cellulose, or to the cellulose xanthate crumbs before or during the dissolving step, or to the dissolved cellulose xanthate before or after filtration. The coagulating bath may contain sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate.
