Abstract

1376203 Polyacrylonitrile filaments BAYER AG 15 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 12047/72 Heading B5B Polyacrylonitrile filaments are made by dissolving an acrylonitrile polymer in a solvent and adding 0À5 to 10% by weight preferably 1-5%, based on the weight of the polymer, of an additive which is soluble both in the solvent used and in water and which may be (i) a polyoxyethylene corresponding to the general formula H-O-(CH 2 -CH 2 -O) n -H where n is preferably a number from 20 to 500; (ii) a reaction product of glycerin with ethylene oxide corresponding to the general formula in which r, m and n together preferably total a number from 9 to 450; and (iii) the sodium salt of a sulphuric acid ester corresponding to the general formula R-O-SO 3 Na in which R represents an alkyl radical, preferably having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms, is added to the resulting solution, wherein the solution is dryspun and at the same time the solvent is removed by evaporation and wherein the resulting filaments or fibres are stretched and the soluble additive is dissolved out during washing of the fibres or filaments. A copolymer containing at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile may be used as the polymer, and the preferred spinning solvent is dimethyl formamide. Washing may be effected during stretching of the filaments in boiling water. Filaments so made show enhanced soil-resisting properties.
