Abstract

A coating is formed on beryllium or an alloy consisting predominantly of beryllium by treatment with an acid aqueous solution containing fluoride and one or more of sodium, potassium and ammonium. The solution preferably has a pH of 2-6 and contains at least 0.5% fluoride and at least 0.5% sodium and/or potassium or at least 2% ammonium. The solution may also contain lithium; beryllium; chloride, sulphate, nitrate and radicals of an organic acid having a primary dissociation constant greater than 10-6, e.g. oxalic, succinic, maleic, salicylic, tartaric, phthalic, acetic, benzoic and citric acids; and an accelerator such as divalent tin e.g. stannous chloride, trivalent arsenic e.g. sodium arsenite, pentavalent vanadium e.g. sodium metavanadate, hexavalent chromium e.g. sodium chromate, quadrivalent or hexavalent molybdenum e.g. molybdenum disulphide or sodium molybdate, or hexavalent tungsten e.g. sodium tungstate. Solutions containing hydrofluoric acid, sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride, potassium acid fluoride and sulphamic acid are among the examples. According to the Provisional Specification, the solution may contain lithium instead of sodium, potassium and ammonium.
