Abstract

A magnesium or magnesium-alloy surface is prepared for chemical nickel plating with a solution of the nickel cation-hypophosphite anion type by treatment first with an aqueous solution containing orthophosphoric acid or chromic acid, second with an aqueous solution of a fluoride e.g. hydrofluoric acid, and third with an aqueous solution of a pyrophosphate. The chromic acid solution may also contain nitric acid together with alkali metal nitrate or hydrofluoric acid. The nickel plating solution should contain, in addition to the nickel and hypophospite, ions of citrate, fluoride and lead. The plated article is preferably heat-treated at 400 DEG F. Specification 785,694 is referred to.
