Abstract
A phosphate coating is formed on zinc or zinc alloy surfaces by treating the surface with an aqueous acidic solution containing zinc phosphate, at least 0.1% by weight of glycerophosphate and at least 0.025% of a complex fluoride radical. The glycerophosphates may be glycerophosphoric acid or the alkali metal and ammonium mono and diglycerophosphate salts. The complex fluoride radical is provided by the addition to the solution of the following acids: fluoboric, fluosilicic, fluotitanic, fluozirconic, and their salts, particularly the alkali metal and ammonium salts. The solution contains 0.1-1% of the glycerophosphate, 0.025-2.5% of the fluoride radical, 0.5-2.5% phosphate ion, the zinc ion concentration not exceeding 0.5% by weight, and it may also contain 0.2-1% of a nitrate and/or 0.0002-0.008% of a nitrite, 0.0003-0.005% of copper ions, 0.01-0.4% of nickel ions and also wetting agents. The copper and nickel ions are formed by the addition of the carbonates, nitrates, chlorides, or sulphates of the metal and the acidity of the solution is less than 40 points. The zinc surface may be zinc or galvanized ferrous sheets and treatment is effected in the solution at 120-160 DEG F. for 7 seconds-10 minutes.
