Abstract

A complex fluoride coating is formed on a surface of titanium or an alloy consisting predominantly of titanium by treating the surface with an acid aqueous solution containing fluoride ions and ions of sodium, potassium and/or ammonium, with or without lithium, the coating formation being accelerated by incorporating divalent tin, trivalent arsenic, pentavalent vanadium, hexavalent chromium, quadrivalent or hexavalent molybdenum, or hexavalent tungsten in the solution. The preferred accelerators are, respectively, stannous chloride, sodium arsenite, sodium metavanadate, sodium chromate, molybdenum disulphide, sodium molybdate and sodium tungstate. They may be added to the solutions disclosed in the parent Specification.
