818,275. Detachable propelling installations. SKINNER, K. Aug. 21, 1956, No. 25564/56. Class 114. A mounting 2 having inclined flanges 7, 8 connected by a tubular portion 6 is bolted through the flange 7 to the stern 9 of a boat and the flange 8 supports an engine 11 whose shaft. 16 carries a coupling sleeve 15 which can be inserted in the cylinder 6 as far as a collar 14 therein. The stern is pierced to receive a casing 19 enclosing a propeller shaft 20 the inner end of which carries a cross-piece 24 adapted to engage in the coupling member 15 when the casing is inserted in the cylinder 6 as far as the collar 14, clamping means 18 being provided to retain it there. Instead of the collar 14 and clamping device 18, a flange on the end of the casing 19 may be clamped to a sleeve on the shaft 16 by a union nut. In modifications, a trunnion mounting protected by a flexible gaiter or a ball and socket joint permit the assembly to pivot about an horizontal axis when a skeg on the casing 19 encounters an obstacle. The ball and socket mounting also permits steering by the propeller.
