Abstract

614,896. Discharge lamps. SCOPHONY. Ltd., and WIKKENHAUSER, G. Aug. 12, 1946, No. 23902. [Class 39 (i)] At least one electrode of an electric discharge lamp, or a support for such electrode, is taken into the interior of the lamp envelope through a flexible metal membrane 11 which constitutes a gas-tight seal and permits limited movement of the electrode. In a mercury vapour lamp the membrane may be of stainless steel, chrome steel or chromium, or its inner surface may be plated with platinum, chromium or rhodium. The membrane may be concentrically corrugated and is preferably provided with a stop 16 to limit the movement of the electrode. The flexibility of the membrane or membranes may be sufficient to enable the two electrodes to be brought into contact with one another, as in a carbon arc lamp, for starting purposes. The electrodes may be moved, after starting, to increase the arc length to the most favourable value.
