Abstract
802,877. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 6, 1955 [Dec. 14, 1954], No. 34975/55. Class 39(1). A low pressure positive column discharge lamp containing an inert starting gas and a small quantity of mercury in excess of that vaporized during operation in which the generally tubular envelope is of non-circular cross-section with a high circumference-to-area ratio has the starting gas, preferably argon, in the pressure range from 0À1 to 1À0 mm. of mercury. The tube may be of the flattened form shown in Fig. 1, or may have a continuous longitudinal groove 23, Fig. 3, at a series of spaced indentation 33, 34 on alternate sides as shown in Fig. 4. The envelope wall may be provided internally with a phosphor coating.
