Abstract

564,053. Electrodeposition of indium. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 2, 1943, No. 8836. Convention date, June 22, 1942. [Class 41] Indium is electroplated on steel &c. from an aqueous solution of the fluoborate, fluosilicate, or fluoride which may be prepared by electrolysing a solution of the corresponding acid using an indium anode and a cathode enclosed in a permeable animal membrane to prevent deposition of indium. Soluble anodes of indium are used in the electroplating and an auxiliary carbon anode may be provided to reduce a tendency for indium to build up in the bath. Articles to be plated are degreased and given electrolytic treatment in an alkaline bath, followed by an acid dip and washing. Indium-plated bearings may be heated to 340‹ F. or over to diffuse the cooling into the base metal.
