601,173. Bearings. THORNTON, A. A. (Cleveland Graphite Bronze Co.). July 10, 1945, No. 17582. Drawings to Specification. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A bearing structure has the working surface composed of 2 to 25 per cent tin and the balance lead, this surface being formed by simultaneous electro deposition of the tin and lead on a supporting backing. The preferred range is 6 to 10 per cent tin. The backing preferably of steel and having a layer of silver or of copper-lead to provide an intermediate layer in the bearing is first anodically etched at 6 volts for one minute in an electrolyte of 30-80 grams sodium or potassium cyanide per litre and 30-80 grams of sodium or potassium hydroxide per litre, rinsed, pickled in hydrochloric acid for one minute, rinsed again, and then given a strike of silver, copper, or tin, in readiness for the electroplating. The plating bath preferably consists of lead as fluoborate 90-110 grams per litre, tin as fluoborate 8-12 grams per litre, free fluoboric acid 30-40 grams per litre, gelatine 1-4 grams per litre, and a hydroxybenzene such as resorcinol 3-7 grams per litre or pyrogallol ¢-2 grams per litre, the current being 20 amperes per square foot and a lead-tin alloy anode being used.
