Abstract

Etching of low current density non-plating areas of a cast iron cathode is prevented when electroplating e.g. with a metal such as chromium, from a chromic acid bath containing chloride, fluoride or silicofluoride ions, by maintaining the said low current density areas of the cathode uniformly cathodic with respect to an auxiliary electrode placed adjacent said areas. Typically the auxiliary electrode is of lead or lead-tin or lead-antimony alloys and is connected to the positive lead of an auxiliary power supply of which the negative lead is connected to the cathode, and the cathodic current density applied via the auxiliary electrode is 0.1 to 9 amps/dm2.
