Abstract
1404067 Electrolytic treatment of copper or copper alloy INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 18 Jan 1973 [7 March 1972] 2555/73 Heading C7B An article made of Cu or of an alloy having more than 50 wt per cent of Cu is electrolytically treated as cathode (e.g. in preparation for subsequent electro-plating with Ni or Cu) in an aqueous solution at 100-200F comprising borax, the current density at the article surface being at least 1 amp/sq ft and the current being applied for a time to pass a total charge of at least 30 coulombs/sq ft. In the treatment the surface is not attacked but the treated surface shows adhesion for subsequent electro-plating. The article may be of Cu, brass or Al bronze. The solution may be acid-free. For example, a Cu article is pre-cleaned and then given the electrolytic treatment in a stainless steel or polypropylene tank using a counter electrode of Cu, stainless steel, Pb or Au. The solution may additionally contain as wetting agent sodium lauryl sulphate and as complexing agent the tetrasodium salt of EDTA, sodium gluconate, Rochelle salt, or sodium citrate. Subsequent electro-plating may be in a Watts Ni, sulphamate Ni or acid Cu bath.
