Abstract

Shelling peas.-A device for shelling peas comprises a plate 1 which is cut, bent, and pressed to provide a pod-receiving recess 5 in which are positioned a knife edge 10 and diverging guides 7 having a V-shaped pea-discharging opening between them, and a pressed up convex portion 6 the edge 6<a> of which acts as an abutment to dislodge the peas from the pods which are moved by hand along the recess 5, past the knife 10, the pod-opening guides 7 and the pea-removing abutment 6a. The knife edge 10 is formed by two bent-up portions 9 which are cut on three sides from the plate 1. The guides 7 are formed by centrally cutting the recess 5 from the knife 10 to the abutment 6a where a transverse cut is made to permit the guides to be bent up. The guides 7 and the knife 10 may be connected by wires 8, and the edges of the plate are flanged to stiffen the device which is adapted to bridge the top of a pail or other pea-receiving vessel. In a modification the slitting knife is formed of a single bent-up portion and is corrugated to open the pod slightly, the pressed-up portion does not extend to the end of the device, and the device is stiffened by longitudinal flutings parallel to its edges.
