0NION-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 31, 1918. Serial No. 237,563.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR FELIX BIZETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morganza, in the parish of Pointe Coupee and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Onion-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is particularly devised to facilitate the crating of onions and similar goods.
Its principal object is to provide a device Which may be placed on the edge of an onion crate and used to trim the top and roots from the onions, or other goods being crated, there being an opening provided in the bottom of the device to permit the onions to drop into the crate after trimming.
A second object of the invention is to provide a device which will permit the trimming of the top and roots of each onion simultaneously.
A third object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be easily and cheaply made and which will be eflective and durable in operation.
Other and further objects will appear as the device is set forth in detail in the following description.
The specific embodiment of the invention, as shown in the drawings is but one of which the invention is capable. The actual reduction to practice may show other embodiments to be more desirable and the right is claimed to employ any which are comprehended in spirit by the sub-joined claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in the operation of trimming an onion,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the device in the region of the cutting blades.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a base plate 1 which may be of any suitable material but for the purpose of this invention is preferably of wood. At one end the plate 1 has permanently attached to it the block 2 and the oscillatory plate 3 is hingedly connected with this block by means of a hinge 4.
Approximately at its longitudinal center of the base plate but to one side of its transverse center, the elongated opening 5 is formed whose length lies in the direction of the length of the base plate.
A blade 6 is suitably set in the plate 1 adjacent to one of the long sides of the open ing 5 and this blade is inclined toward the opening, so that its cutting edge 7 will lie in a line directly above the side of the opening 5.
The oscillatory plate 3 carries a block 8 which is suitably aifixed on the under face of the former and is designed to cooperate with the cutting edge of the blade 6 to remove the roots of an onion. This block Sis tapered longitudinally, so that the oscillatory plate 3 may be held in an inclined position when the block and blade are in contact. This arrangement always leaves the handle 9 of the oscillatory plate sufliciently raised to permit it to be easily gripped by the end.
A blade 10 is set in the under face of the oscillatory plate 3 and is designed to contact with the upper face of the base plate 1 close to that longitudinal edge of the opening 5 which is opposite the blade 6.
The operation of the device is obvious. The plate 1 may be set on the edge of an onion crate, so that the opening 5 is over the interior of the latter. As the onions are crated, each one or several are placed on the base plate 1, so that the bulb or bulbs are over the opening 5. The roots will then extend over the blade 6 and the tops will extend back transversely over the plate 1. As the oscillatory plate 3 is pressed down, the block 8 cooperates with the blade 6 to remove the roots and the blade 10 shears off the tops at the same time. The trimmed onion or onions are then dropped down through the opening 5 into the crate.
The invention having been described what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In an onion trimmer, a base plate having an opening near its horizontal center and offset from its transverse center, an OS- cillatory plate hingedly connected to the base plate, and means carried by both plates whereby the top and roots of an onion are trimmed simultaneously permitting the latter to drop through the aforesaid opening.
2. In an onion trimmer, a base plate having an elongated opening near its longitudinal center and offset from its transverse center, an oscillatory plate hinged ly connected the other side of said opening, whereby the to the base plate, a blade carried by the lease roots and top, of an onion may be cut oil plate on one side of the elongated opening, simultaneously and the latter pennitted to 10 a block carried by the oscillatory plate and drop through said opening. 5 coiiperating with said blade, and a second In testimony whereefl signature.
blade carried by the'oscillatory plate and designed to contact with the base plate on ARTHUR FELIX BIZETTE.
