Abstract

A door hinge guard, comprising of a strip incorporating three integral hinges is attached to the door and frame by faces A, D respectively. <IMAGE>

Description

DOOR HINGE GUARD.
This idea came about after my 18 month old daughter severly injured the tips of two of her fingers on her right hand,when she was steadying herself as she came in through the back door, just as a draught blew through the house and slammed the door.
This application is an improvement on the first application dated 9th Sept 1987,file No.8721134,as it' is essential to position Face A of the door hinge guard on the door E for correct operation of the door hinge guard.
Ref. to drawing 1/3.Item F shows a section through a door frame.
Item E shows a section through a door in the closed position.The door hinge guard is attatched as follows:-Face D is attatched to the door frame F by a suitable means.The door hinge guard is folded flat against the door E.Then,by aligning the holes G on faces A,B and C of the door hinge guard,the door E can be marked (ie,with a bradawl,pencil etc.) so allowing correct positioning ofFace A of the door hinge guard on the door E.The door E can then be opened as in Fig.2/3 and Face A of the door hinge guard can then be attatched by suitable means to the door E in the correct position,as marked previously.With the door in the closed position as in Fig.l/3 Face C lies flat against Face B, and Face B lies flat against Face A so keeping the whole unit neatly flat against the door E when in the closed position.
Ref.to drawing 2/3.This shows the door E partially open,because Face A is attatched to the door E,and Face D is attatched to the frame F.As the door is opened Faces B and C unfold.This allows the door to open,but prevents a person's fingers from being placed in the dangerous position between the door E and the frame F.
Ref. to drawing 3/3.This shows the door E in the open position because Face A is attatched to the door E and Face D is attatched to the frame F.Faces A and B have almost completely unfolded, covering the gap between the door E and frame F,preventing fingers being placed in the gap.
When the door is closed,Faces B and C fold away from the gap, so pushing fingers away from the closing gap and preventing injury.Because of the proportionate lengths of Faces B and C and the position where Faces A and D have been attatched to the frame F and the door E,when it is closed the hinge guard folds flat against the door.
The three drawings only show a section of door and frame and a piece of hinge guard,for ease of explanation and understanding of how it works.

Claims (4)

1. A door hinge guard comprising of a strip typically of a plastic or other suitable material, incorporating three longitudinal integral hinges, whereby when one face is attached to a doorframe and one face is attached to a door by screws or other suitable means the strip is folded flat against the door in the closed position and unfolds by means of the hinges to provide a barrier across the door hinge aperture when the door is in the open position.
2. A door hinge guard as claimed in claim 1 wherein pilot holes are provided in the two centre faces such that when one face has been attached to the doorframe the strip can be folded flat against the door and the fixing position of the face to be attached to the door can be accurately marked via the pilot holes in the centre faces.
3. A door hinge guard as claimed in claims 1 and 2 wherein the strip comprises of four seperate narrower strips of a suitable material joined together at intervals along their length by conventional hinges, these hinges typically being made of metal.
4. A door hinge guard substantially as described herein with reference to accompanying drawings refs. 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3.
