Abstract

1434282 Boots etc A DASSLER 11 May 1973 [24 May 1972 (2)] 22703/73 Heading A3B A spike for a sports shoe, particularly for use on plastics tracks, includes a body having first and second ends with a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, the second end being adapted to be secured to the outsole of a sports shoe, at least one penetrating surface of said body being generally conically or pryamidally tapered towards said first end and being provided with one or more grooves extending parallel or transverse to the generatrices of the body to form at least one support surface for limiting the depth of penetration of the body into the track, and located between the penetrating surface and the second end but spaced from the second end. In a first embodiment (Fig. 1) the spike 5 includes a conical portion 6 formed with grooves 8 the spike being secured to the outsole by a threaded stem 4. The bottom of each groove 8 is shaped as shown at 11, the bottom of the groove near the apex 9 forming the penetrating surface and the bottom of the groove near the base 10 forming the supporting surface. The spike may be truly conical or may be formed by a convex generatrix. In a modification (not shown) the cone may be truncated and a small spike or recess may be provided at the truncated apex. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4) the spike includes a pyramidal penetrating surface 18 and a flat supporting surface 21, the supporting surfaces being increased by cutting notches 24 in the edges of the pyramidal portion 18. In a third embodiment (Fig. 7) the spike 42 has a conical body 43 which is provided with transverse grooves to provide supporting surfaces 44.
