Abstract

1458460 Continuous casting MONSANTO CO 10 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 43885/74 Heading B3F To form a filamentary jet to be film-stabilized until solidified, molten metal is extruded through an orifice in a member made of polycrystalline thorium oxide having a density of from 9À5 to 10À0 gm./cm.<SP>3</SP> and a purity of at least 99À5% thorium oxide, e.g. a base-plate of a crucible or in an insert in such a base-plate. The thorium oxide contains up to 0À5% by weight of a sintering agent, such as oxide of calcium, cerium, magnesium or yttrium or ammonium chloride. The thoria member may be produced by hotpressing or sintering and machining. The orifice may be countersunk, e.g. to have a cone-shaped entrance with a 30 degrees vertex, and have a length/diameter ratio of 1 to 20, There may be more than one orifice. An orificed insert may be secured in a base-plate by a clamp or hold-down ring. A steel bar containing 1-2% Si and 0À25- 0À75 Mn was melted in a crucible with an orificed base and the crucible was heated to 1510-1550‹ C. and a second bar fed in through a seal so that its tip melted and dripped in. A pressure of inert gas of 20 p.s.i.g. forced the alloy through the orifice.
