Abstract
1378004 Continuous casting MONSANTO CO 2 Dec 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 56049/71 Heading B3F Molten steel 11 is extruded through an orifice 12, from a crucible assembly 10 of refractory metal oxide, e.g. Al 2 O 3 or BeO, and the reversible chemical action, which occurs between carbon in the steel and the crucible material produces CO and tends either to erode refractory oxide at the orifice 12 or deposit it there; by regulating the partial pressure of the CO, e.g. by purging with Ar, equilibrium between the erosion and deposition is maintained. The CO pressure may be changed to increase or decrease the orifice size. The Ar may be passed across the steel surface as at 15, or bubbled through the metal. The steel stream 14, e.g. from an orifice 12 of less than 200 microns, and which may contain Al to assist stabilization, passes into an oxidizing atmosphere such as air, CO 2 or CO in a chamber 13.
