Abstract

1330538 Continuous casting MONSANTO CO 27 July 1970 [28 July 1969] 36321/70 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions C1 and F4] To produce wire, molten metal 1 such as copper, steel or stainless steel plus 1% aluminium, is spun as a jet 13 through an orifice 11 in a part 3 of a crucible assembly or crucible 2 in which a charge of metal is heated (e.g. melted by an induction coil 7 and a susceptor 6), the orificedefining member (which may be a base-plate 3 or an insert 12 in the plate) being a single crystal of BeO or a material which is at least 99À5% polycrystalline BeO and of a density greater than 95% of the theoretical density for BeO. The orifice 11 is formed by machining a countersink recess in the face of a beryllia plate and then drilling and polishing the orifice to be coaxial with the recess. Alternatively, a polycrystalline beryllia plate is prepared by a bisque process, being shaped and drilled before final firing to a required density and then polished. The orifice is less than 35 mils in diameter and has a length/diameter ratio between 1 and 20. There may be several insert discs in the crucible base-plate. They may be clamped in the plate or held down by a ring. The orifices may be tapered and lead from a tapered countersink. Stainless steel plus 1% Al may be melted in the crucible 2 in a vacuum and argon under pressure applied by way of an inlet 8 to force the melt into a chamber 14 containing CO which forms a layer on the jet to stabilize it until it solidifies. The apparatus is in an insulating cylinder 5. A one-piece BeO crucible may be used for spinning molten copper into propane. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,153,577 and 1,197,972.
