Abstract
1295620 Continuous casting; composite filaments MITSUI MINING & SMELTING CO Ltd 12 Oct 1971 [28 Dec 1970 22 April 1971] 47469/71 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions B5 and C7] Composite filaments comprising a metallic core in a thermoplastic resin sheath are made by conventional conjugate spinning, using as the core supply a metal, such as Bi, Cd, Pb and Sn and alloys thereof, whose m.p. is below the extrusion temperature of the resin. The spun composite may be attenuated immediately after spinning, while the metal core is still molten, or may be drawn hot or cold and in one or two stages after solidification. Depending on the quantity of metal, extruded by gas pressure from a melting furnace (3), and the degree of drawing, the metallic core may break into discontinuous sections. In examples, polypropylene, nylon or a polycarbonate is used with pure Sn, an alloy containing Pb, Sn and Cd and optionally Bi, or a Pb alloy containing Sb. Two or more cores may be present in a filament, the cores being optionally of different composition. Metal filaments may be produced by removing the resin layer.
