Abstract

1450560 Tunnelling machines; tunnelling shields STELMO Ltd and J KIRKWOOD 3 March 1975 [18 Dec 1973] 58547/73 Heading E1F A sweep arm is mounted on the upper surface of a ramp 20 extending upwards and rearwards from the bottom of the leading end of a tunnelling shield so that it can be given an oscillatory motion over said surface to sweep spoil over the surface to a discharge zone to pass to a conveyer extending rearwards through the shield. Preferably the movement of the arm is such that it passes the discharge zone in each direction of its movement. The arm may, when seen in plan, be a sector of a circle pivoting about the axis of the circle and with an angular extent not greater than 280‹, preferably 150‹. However the arm may be a blade 23 pivotable through an arc of between 320‹ to 360‹ with the movement of the blade always terminating over the discharge zone. Cutting tools may be provided along the length of the arm. When the arm is a sector of a circle then a stationary blade may be located immediately above the path of movement of the arm to sweep it clear. The discharge zone may be a recess 21 in the rearward edge of the ramp and a chute may be provided to lead spoil from the recess to the conveyer. The oscillatory motion of the arm may be caused by a double acting hydraulic ram.
