Abstract

1,017,163. Agitating furnace charges; charging electrolytic furnaces. NORSK ALUMINIUM CO., A.S. March 4, 1964 [March 4, 1963], No. 9140/64. Heading F4B. A combined machine for breaking surface crusts and distributing charge material to electrolytic furnaces comprises a frame 1 on wheels 2 driven by a motor 3 alongside a row of furnaces, an arm 7 with a rotary head 8 and pivotally mounted at 9 to allow oscillatory movement in a vertical plane and rotation, about its own axis, and a hopper 4 with a feed device 13 having a shoot 14. Downward pressure of the arm, which may be steady or oscillatory, is exerted by an hydraulic motor 12 through leaf springs 11 and a lever 15. The machine is positioned over the appropriate furnace, and the arm 7 is reciprocated on to a hard crust with the machine stopped until the crust breaks, or if the crust is soft the machine moves on with the arm depressed. The feed device 13 remains closed while the arm is reciprocating. After starting by a manually operated switch these operations are controlled automatically by appropriately positioned contacts.
