Abstract

1328864 Conveying solids in liquid SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 7 Dec 1970 [8 Dec 1969] 58016/70 Heading F1R [Also in Division F2] In a method of transporting solid particles in a liquid carrier through a pipeline, the solid particles are dispersed in an oil-water emulsion and the mixture is dispersed in a liquid with which the particles-containing emulsion is immiscible, and which has a lower viscosity, the resulting dispersion being pumped through the pipeline. The liquid forms an intermediate layer between the pipe walls, and the emulsion so as to reduce flow resistance. The solids may be sand, ores, minerals, sulphur, coal, fertilisers. The emulsion which may be an oil in water or water in oil emulsion, may contain stabilizing, surfactants or detergents. The lower viscosity liquid may contain friction reducing polymers of high molecular weight. Examples of preferred surfactants, detergents and polymers are described.
