Abstract

1307785 Diffusion coating of superalloys with nickel CHROMALLOY AMERICAN CORP 19 April 1971 |22 June 1970] 25629/71 Heading C7F A method of forming a nickel coating on a chromium-containing superalloy article comprises embedding the article in a mixture of nickel powder an inert refactory material and a small amount of sulphur e. g. up to 0À1%, and heating the article and said mixture e. g. at 1050‹C., to effect diffusion coating of the article with nickel. The amount of free oxygen present in the mixture is kept low to prevent oxidation of the sulpher. This may be achieved by including a quantity of Ti, Th, Ce or Y in the mixture or by sweeping out oxygen with an inert gas e. g. argon. After the nickel coating has been formed the surface is cleaned and aluminized to produce a coating containing nickel aluminide. This may be achieved by embedding the nickel-coated article in a mixture comprising aluminium, a buffering metal e.g. Cr. Ni, Fe or Co, ammonium bifluoride and an inert refractory material and heating.
